Gen X here. He did born-again when I was 15, lots of slick mush for a few years in the ‘80s (Infidels was good, though) and the two concerts I saw in college in the later 80s were lackadaisical. Yet, I was a patient fan and figured he would eventually make a comeback. Which he did in 1997.

So one-fifth of Americans believe the president _should_ govern by fiat? I’d like to know more about that population, but I’m guessing many are evangelicals and Christian Nationalists.

There’s no longer any pretense this has anything to do with crime (there are cities or parts of cities in SC and Ohio that have higher crime rates than DC — send the troops there!). This is about establishing a precedent for Trump seizing control of the nation’s capital when he wants to.

Similarly, as contemptible as Trump is, let’s stop referring to him as “thrice married” as if it’s a character flaw. I usually read it in the context of surprise at the level of support by Christian evangelicals, as if “we” wouldn’t consider two divorces to be a problem but “they” do, or should.
