This is the difference between secularism and atheism/agnosticism. The latter refers to individual religious beliefs, while the former refers to a society in which individual religious beliefs are respected but none are recognized as superior over others. (H/T to Susan Jacoby for that distinction)

Well stated! I would probably fall into the definition of agnostic, but I much prefer to use the term humanist to describe myself as it is more to the point. It suggests a set of principles one believes in rather than a set of metaphysical propositions one does not believe in.

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!
