My thoughts on this have been that this is why a federal European Union could work, as all the neoliberal commitments from the treaties would no longer be a concern and we could further integrate favourable policies, but it’s double-edged based on electorate alone

To give you an idea, the EU as a bloc is the second strongest superpower in the world

And that power, which we can decide the trajectory of through EU parliamentary elections and citizen mobilisation anchored within the treaties, must be used for good

The US completely opposed the euro as a currency, considering how much it equalised the playing field

Remember what happened when France and Germany refused to join in for the second Iraq war

The EU is not perfect, but very much perfectible: it absolutely can rival the US, & we can be better too

As Europeans, we must never forget too that the US government has never been a real ally: the EU is a pain in the ass for it

Historically, they completely opposed a political and social EU, and wanted France to abandon its nuclear arsenal as a chip in exchange for the USSR to abandon its own

It really is, it’s infuriating: every life has a place

The first environmental protections were based solely on the beauty of something, such as when Yosemite became the first national park in the US

It wasn’t to protect it, it was because it was pretty

If law is ever a field that interests you, environmental law needs a lot of help, especially in Europe, where they are even struggling to recruit the people they need (and it’s for a good cause)

The rule of thumb is to take something you enjoy & just add environmental law to it & there’s your job

Something that has been solidifying my commitment lately was when my environmental law professor dropped: “When it comes to protection status currently, as an animal, plant or insect, you better be an aesthetically pleasing species”

The EU only started protecting earthworms very recently
