We love working with our moss, Physcomitrium (formerly Physcomitrella) patens.

In this dissecting microscope image, you can see the juvenile protonema filaments spread away from the main plant as they explore the new areas.

STEM people who think their work is apolitical are just people who like the current political context.

The humanities explains why this is happening to scientists, and it has nothing to do with the existence of the humanities. It’s laughable Morris thinks science can be walled off from the political context in which it operates. Ask biologists studying gender what happened to their grants.

I was just informed that our Country’s “Jobs Numbers” are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory. This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000. These were Records — No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes. McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under “TRUMP” despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting “Kamala” elected – How did that work out? Jerome “Too Late” Powell should also be put “out to pasture.” Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Unquestionably the most dangerous and corrupt attack on the independence of US economic data in American history. Trump is firing the head of the BLS, a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate, simply because the job numbers came in below his expectations today

Work devotion in academia is often described as a cultural mandate that
defines work as a calling deserving of undivided allegiance. Critical
perspectives point to how this ideal worker norm has gendered
consequences and produces performance expectations that only a
worker without care responsibilities can satisfy. Drawing on in-depth
interviews with 92 PhD holders, this study examines the range of
strategies women and men use to navigate and reframe the ideal worker
norm in academia, analysing how they manage the competing demands
of work and family, as well as the competing demands within academia.
We extend existing research on academia by applying approaches that
emphasise the benefits of multiple roles, showing how a divided work
devotion with room for external responsibilities, expands academics’
frames of reference and provide alternative sources of meaning.
However, our analysis shows how position, and whether one holds a
temporary or permanent contract, is key to understand who can allow
themselves to uphold a divided allegiance to academia. This study
suggests that it is not gender or care responsibilities per se, but rather
the intersection between these dimensions and positional power, that
influence academics options for navigating the ideal worker norm.
