Omura's whale (Balaenoptera omurai) song features and structure in northern Australian waters This paper describes Omura's whale vocalizations recorded off northern Australia. Most common was a two-unit “doublet” (17–50 Hz, peak 25.5 Hz, duration ∼15 s).

Fresh off the press from colleagues at the CMST lab (not on Bluesky), Australia. Paper focusing on Omura’s whale song features off northern Australia, published as JASA-EL EDITOR'S PICK

🤯 "perhaps most great whales have an unrecognized potential for great longevity that has been masked by the demographic disruptions of industrial whaling. This unrecognized longevity has profound implication for basic biology and conservation of whales." Astonishing stuff.

We often study cetaceans (🐳🐬) by deploying underwater microphones (called hydrophones) & observing them acoustically instead of visually! But how do scientists identify whale species by sound alone? Another #MarMamFacts thread! 🧵⤵️
