We pray God's blessing and strength for the new Pope Leo XIV, for the church, and for Catholics across the world today.

Hannah Rich: Aid does not win votes β€” but it should Why has support for development waned, asks Hannah Rich

My piece in this week's @churchtimes.bsky.social on having the imagination to make poverty history & why maintaining (or even raising) the overseas development budget ought to be a vote winner:

"Pope Francis's commitment to the poor in deeds as well as words is an example we should seek to follow. His commitment to a fairer economy and to stewarding creation has inspired Christians around the world, particularly those of us on the left of politics. As he is laid to rest today, we pray that his legacy might lead us towards greater economic justice globally and to a better world.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace."

A statement from our chair, Anna Dixon MP, on the day of Pope Francis's funeral. May he rest in peace.

"What thoughtful rich people call the problem of poverty, thoughtful poor people with equal justice call the problem of riches." - RH Tawney, whose tradition & legacy inspires our annual Tawney Dialogue.

On "liberation day", whatever that will come to mean for the world, it felt hopeful & prophetic to be in a packed committee room in parliament for the @chrleft.bsky.social Tawney Dialogue last night, discussing where we are twenty years on from Make Poverty History.

Incredible scenes in the @chrleft.bsky.social post bag this week as someone has sent me this membership recruitment leaflet from c.1995 - I think we could do far worse than this as a slogan for 2025 too.

Brilliant (but dreich) weekend in Glasgow catching up with lovely Scottish @chrleft.bsky.social members, some inspiring fringes on energy & poverty, and powerful speeches from Anas Sarwar and the PM. These islands, like this movement, are truly better together.

A real pinch-me honour to be here tonight for the PM’s Advent reception, celebrating all that churches and Christians do for this country and in the party.

In which, as Christians on the left of politics, we dare to have an opinion on the biggest social policy change in a generation. Proud of the work, grace and good disagreement that went into this.

A very welcome statement from the magnificent @chrleft.bsky.social.

Many who share my politics have described the #AssistedDyingBill as β€œprogressive”. There’s nothing progressive about opting for death over a well funded social care service providing the best palliative treatment.
