YEAH tbh i wanted to learn it because i tried using models but i would always get paranoid about copyright/usage stuff and i felt kinda guilty that i was using models that i didnt even make myself lol so its nice to just create exactly what i need from scratch

this is a rough estimate but i think i spent 3-4 hours in blender and like 1-2 hours painting over

blender learning curve was def rough i spent over a year learning it thru youtube and then later a paid class, but now that i can model quickly it saves a LOT of time. i would recommend it if u enjoy it tbh!

this process allows me to create a piece like this fairly quickly, this one was made in like two evenings

i model the environment in blender -> i set up lighting and add basic color in 3D -> i do some basic compositing in blender -> i move to my 2D drawing program and paint over the 3D render, make the colors more interesting, add detail -> i draw the character in -> profit

i dont trace i just paint directly on top of the 3D render!

So it depends on a lot of factors! Since im really used to modeling now and can do it quickly, doing it in 3D is 100x faster. When i was still more of a beginner and took forever to make a 3D model, i would mostly draw it by hand and still do sometimes!

anyway this is just my opinion on where the line is but i dont make the laws and im not gonna b calling out anyone by name cus im not getting involved in that shit!!!!!

there are some types of general styles that are not super unique so it doesnt really fall under what i mean, i mean more like an indie artists VERY unique style

ALSO yeah copying indie artists vs a big brand is different optics

yeah i feel like its definitely different, for fanwork trying to look official its way more okay to me, because there is a reason for it to look so accurate if that makes sense? also it doesnt mean the artist is making that style their entire brand

yeah its normal to do it for learning but thats different than lifting one artists entire art style and only doing that

Yeah this is a bit of a different situation, im talking more about indie artists ripping off other indie artists! i think emulating styles for practice like you say is super fun and also very useful
