With support from AFO's Bergstrom Award, I completed my master's thesis on Harris's Hawks in south Texas andwas able to draw exciting conclusions into how urbanization affects raptor social behavior. In more urban areas, group sizes were smaller and social interactions declined to levels similar to solitary raptors. This pattern may reflect the relative stability of urban environments compared to the unpredictable desert, suggesting that sociality functions as a strategy to navigate complex habitats. Although Harris's Hawks show remarkable adaptability to urban areas, these environments also introduce significant risks such as vehicle collisions, electrocution, and poisoning that must be addressed through conservation efforts. Diurnal anthropogenic noise disrupts Eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) incubation and nest attendance behavior Eastern Bluebirds are often classified as an urban-adapting species. [...] These landscapes are filled with various anthropogenic noise sources such as traffic, construction, and other forms of human activity. Eastern bluebirds willingly breed in nest boxes located in noisy areas, despite it being detrimental to their reproductive success. We hypothesized that this decrease in reproductive success is due to anthropogenic noise pollution disrupting typical incubation and nest attendance behaviors in Eastern bluebird pairs...

AFO's Bergstrom Grants promote question-driven research and other projects that add to our knowledge of the natural history, ecology and/or conservation of birds living under natural conditions. They are restricted to non-professionals, undergraduates, and Masters degree candidates working in the United States or Canada. Deadline for receipt of applications is February 10th, 2026. Access to our grants programs is an AFO members benefit that you can enjoy for only 20 - 30 USD annually, along with many other benefits! NOW HIRING Recruiting co-Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Field Ornithology Picture: common tern with open beak, calling and standing on marshy vegetation

As co-editor-in-chief, you will be able to lead JFO in becoming increasingly important within the field of ornithology, by broadening its international scope and making a global impact. Average workload is estimated to be 5-6 hours per week. There is annual stipend compensation of $7500 for this position. JFO's current editorial board will offer training and on-boarding. Previous experience as an Associate Editor, Subject Editor or Editor-in-Chief is desired.

TO apply for this position, please submit a 1-2 page cover letter and CV by DECEMBER 7, 2025. In your cover letter, please share any thoughts for your goals as an editor and how being a co-EIC would aid your professional development. The expected start date is April 1, 2026.
