i feel like my eyes stop working when i try to edit photos. i'm mainly trying to increase brightness & contrast while not completely washing out the white and losing detail in the midtones and darker areas. but i think i'm on the right track?

related, what free or cheap photo editing software can I get?? i'm just doing basic edits on these in the windows photo app and it is impossible to get these juncos just right there with how high contrast they are
