A huge "thank you" to those who participated in our event on Wed! @aimeebailey.bsky.social did a wonderful job to put everything together and chair it beautifully! We all made a lot of notes and we look forward to getting to know more about the research of our 4 invited speakers (see post below).

Mary Oliver
Of The Empire
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

I work at DMU – the job cuts are a betrayal of everything we stand for DMU has vast sums of money in its cash reserves… Sadly, this money is being stripped away to fund vanity projects outside of Leicester.

This article gives a good summary of what we're going through right now:

For those of you who don't know, DMU is currently proposing mass redundancies, with nearly 100 academic staff 'at risk', sadly including me. It is absolutely brutal.

Please spread the word about this protest rally happening next week in Leicester and come and support us if you're able. #DefendDMU

Just out! Our peer-reviewed critique of the Cass Review has been published by BMC Medical Research Methodology. Please read and share. We show that the Cass Review is fatally flawed and should not be the basis for policy or practice in transgender healthcare.

Screenshot of the article with the following highlighted passage: In recent weeks parkrun has been doggedly pursued by protesters and the media, unhappy at its policy of allowing trans women to identify as female. Never mind the fact that parkrun has always maintained that it is a running event and not a race, has no prizes and hardly any competitive apparatus at all. You can do parkrun on a mobility scooter if you want. You can do it with a pram. You can dope yourself to the eyeballs.

Evidence that the argument against trans inclusion in sport often has absolutely nothing to do with sport itself, and instead is just another vehicle for transphobia. www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/f...

Hot off the press! @jaimackenzie.bsky.social and I's article exploring representations of the charity Mermaids in the British press.
We find that, between 2015 & 2022, the image of the charity as a useful source of support is supplanted by the image of a dangerous and controversial organisation.
