They do this in the WNBA also. Interviewing managers and coaches during live play just says to the audience ‘it’s not about the game or the viewers - it’s about the ego of the broadcasting staff’.

The Channel between France and the UK holds the record for the longest continuous under sea span at 23.5 miles (and a total distance is about 31.5 miles).

The way the Russia/Alaska route is drawn it appears to call for one continuous span underwater for over twice the distance (about 55 miles).
