I was fortunate to not need to feed my children formula when they were infants but this is not the reality for a lot of mothers in Canada. It's expensive. It's subject to contamination during production. It's scarce at times. Surely Canada can do better by our families, and find a solution? #cdnpoli

However, Methanex packed their bags and bailed on little #Kitimat in 2006, which was the first significant blow to local employment. Then in 2010, West Fraser suddenly shuttered their kraft paper plant, Eurocan Pulp & Paper was dismantled, liquidated & the community ultimately left for dead.

People in #Kitimat are not strangers to heavy industry, smells and emissions. Home to Alcan Aluminum (purchased by Rio Tinto Alcan), Eurocan Pulp & Paper Co. (purchased by West Fraser) & Ocelot (purchased by Methanex) there were always smells & smoke belching out of all plants on any given day.

In fact, the entire LNG project was spun to residents as 'clean' 'green' and 'sustainable' from pre-commission through to production. I used to have photographs of the slide deck from one of these forums (I was planning on writing about it at some point in the future w/ PoliticsRespun.)

Multiple public forums promoting LNG were held. I attended on behalf of my employer (who was engaged in industrial education & saw this as a bizdev op.) Zero mention to community in forums that post-commissioning there would be a gargantuan flare lighting up the night sky in perpetuity. 🧵/2

Back in 2013/14, I was back in #Kitimat working on the RTA smelter modernization project. There were two other notable industrial proposals happening at that time:
1 - Northern Gateway Pipeline (ultimately shut down)
2 - LNG Canada (now operational)

Ah, my hometown. #Kitimat is an entirely planned community. Per design, industrial area is located on the opposite side of the river, multi km from any residential homes. For the flare to be effecting homeowners that heat must be insane b/c it would be at least 10+ km away from residences. #bcpoli

This says something about the current state of the economy: none of us have any available money but we have skills (esthetics, mechanics, housekeeping, tax, bookkeeping) to offer others to get what we need. It's a matter of networking. #barter

I make a living running other peoples' businesses. I am not even mildly entrepreneurial. Yet, in the past week, I have bartered my tax/ bookkeeping services to 3 different people in exchange for services. I'm getting my hair done, my car tuned up & my house cleaned for $0 & a few hours of my time.

As an HR person, I am horrified AND delighted after reading this.
