Sen. Smith asks about the implication that the Success Sequence policy does not have an opt-out clause to allow parents to keep their kids out of this biased programming.

Sen. Catherine Ingram

Sen. Ingram asks if the state of Ohio has health education standards. We do not. Ohio legislators have failed to create these standards because they would need to address sex education recommendations from experts.

Comprehensive sex education is much better than abstinence-only programs at delaying intercourse, increases the likelihood that students will use condoms and other contraceptive methods, and decreases STI rates.

Abstinence-only is harmful because these programs “feature misinformation based in fear, gender stereotypes, and shaming tactics that negatively impact students including: LGBTQ-identifying students, those who’ve already engaged in sexual activity, and students who’ve experienced sexual violence.”

The inclusion of abstinence-only programming shows the true intent of the bill – not to give students information to help them be successful, but instead to push one group’s moral agenda on students in public schools across the state.

Success Sequence life planning strategies have long been rejected by academic critics, “because it traces a path that people already likely to succeed usually walk, as opposed to describing a technique that will lift people over systemic hurdles they face in doing so.”
