What I have offered informally and formally in the past two years remains: we are living through a historically difficult moment, perhaps unprecedented. Difficulty defines our era. And yet difficulty must be confronted. Difficulty is at the center of our methods as artists and designers, which seeks to materialize new knowledge, ideas, and interventions to heal ourselves, our society, and its relation to the land. The path ahead will continue to be difficult, regardless of presidential, national, or university politics. By continuing to commit to a space with the widest possible freedom of speech, we can ensure that all subjectivities, all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives can coexist and be debated through the most generative and healthy way possible, our work.
Our work in the studios, our work in the community, our work together in supporting students, our work generating new knowledge and ways of being...our work is what will see us through. I call upon each of us to reaffirm our work, which includes a commitment to building healthier futures, which requires generating communities that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

If you are new, please stay, we are delightful.

And if you are looking at this, you probably have an interest in higher ed policy, so here is a starter pack for that.

A screen shot of text from a Politico pro email. The text reads:

β€œCUTS COULD BE COMING: House Republicans released a seven-month funding patch on Saturday that would add billions of dollars in spending for deportations, veterans’ health care and the military while cutting an even greater amount of funding for non-defense programs.

β€” The plan appears to be calling for $202,344,000 cuts for the Education Department, and the money appears to be generally directed at local programs.”

Almost all of the β€œlocal programs” threatened with cuts here are workforce development programs aimed at training people in jobs and skills that are in demand.

Exactly the programs employers say they want.

Oh, and many of them are earmarks for senators and house members.

I'm old enough to remember when unilateral presidential alteration of the terms of student loan programs was considered on the right to be the greatest threat to the constitutional order.

FAFSA and Student Loan Help Is no Place for AI The so-called Department of Government Efficiency has suggested AI could replace staff that answer thousands of FAFSA and student loan questions every day, this would be a disaster for students.

With so many crazy things happening, focusing on them all is impossible. So, I am trying to pay attention to the things I have expertise
The new admin floated handing over FAFSA and student loan repayment guidance to AI. Here is why that is a terrible idea

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame.

The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight.

It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Screenshot of the article that reads: The Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education, appears to be the latest agency in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency office.

Dozens of researchers and contractors received notices Feb. 10, directing them to immediately stop work on research projects and program evaluations financed by IES, a federal agency with a roughly $800 million budget, sources say.

It was not immediately clear whichβ€”or how manyβ€”of IES’ hundreds of contracts are affected, though one source estimated roughly 170.

The recent opening of a new site in Crystal by New Horizon Academy highlighted the impact of the 2023 actions the then-DFL-controlled Legislature and Gov. Tim Walz.

They lifted the amount of state assistance that lower-income families receive to access child care centers and they created a compensation-support program for child care providers.

β€œThe combination of solving the staffing crisis, plus having more families be able to afford quality care, gave us confidence to open the school in Crystal again,” Chad Dunkley, chief executive of New Horizon, told me after a ribbon-cutting event Monday.
