With Threads debating whether authors should review, and people asking if I'll keep reviewing as a publisher, I wrote this:

And it’s not that the call is wrong, necessarily. Grace isn’t wrong. Fighting might be necessary. The mill isn't safe.

But the burden of that necessity falls heavy. It always does.

Even the small, fragile spaces Black folk carve out for survival are treated as negotiable when the call to fight comes. We are expected to sacrifice, to step forward first, to absorb the losses for ourselves, for other marginalized folk, for the future.

Because she isn't wrong (we later learn the mill was never safe at all), it perfectly highlights the impossible position Black people are so often put in: Stay and risk destruction slowly, or fight and risk destruction immediately.

There's a sequence in Sinners (well, one of many) that I can't stop thinking about: Grace tells them they can’t just stay in the mill. They have to fight.

Grace isn’t wrong to see the danger of waiting—not only for themselves but also for their families and village.
