Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL. And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

As a white guy, I can unequivocally state that this is incredibly stupid. Diversity is good, equality and equity are good, inclusion is good, and I have NEVER been harmed by DEI policies.

FAMU can't use the word Black on anything posted around campus related to Black History Month, to stay in compliance with Florida state laws against DEI. Black students can't use the word Black at their Historically Black College during Black History Month.

coming up with a new idea called "driving like shit olympics". no more bland, unprovable statements like "california drivers are the WORST" allowed. whichever state wins every 4 years gets a moonshot-sized public transit investment to get those fuckers off the road

Why the French film composer who created The Olympic Fanfare is buried in North Carolina Leo Arnaud had a long career as a musician in Europe and Hollywood. A blind date led him to a simpler life.

Since you’re gonna hear it over and over on TV during the Olympics: Here’s how the thrice-knighted French film composer who created β€œBugler’s Dream” (bum-bum-ba-dum-bum) ended up buried behind a church in rural Yadkin County, North Carolina: www.ncrabbithole.com/p/leo-arnaud...

One unintended upside to masking up when out is that I don’t smell it as much when professional offices make, uh, exciting choices in air freshener scents.

We go over to Fairhope for breakfast on Sundays and this morning it was cold enough that the shallower spots in the delta were frozen over. It corresponded with low tide so it was plenty shallow; the deeper water and the saltier water on the bay side weren’t frozen, but it was still a thing to see.

We watched Labyrinth tonight. It, uh, was a lot better when I was 10. There are a number of interesting elements, but it just doesn’t cohere well. It’s fun to have a 16-year-old play a 16-year-old.

Stay warm, folks. If you need help finding a warm place to stay, there are shelters open. It's continuing to be very cold by our standards here.

I really don't have much to complain about. I've made a very good living working primarily with the platform, both as a DBA and as a SQL developer. Like all the big RDBMSes it's got its quirks, but it's got a lot of nice features too. It's been a good career so far, and I've got plenty of future!

I just realized that I've been working with SQL Server as a main part of my job for over 15 years now. Closer to 20 including the time it wasn't my main thing.

Yikes.

As is so often the case, it's human factors that do a lot to make things insecure. And as far as protecting the endpoint, well, if someone has you and your device in their possession, that's a totally different thing. I'm reminded of this xkcd from back in the day.

I want more people to understand just how deeply white supremacy and hierarchy are intentionally embedded into our state institutions. There are so many more good people here than people think.

Friends, there are far more good people in Alabama than you'd think - please don't give in to the temptation to write us off.

It's too much for me to get into now, but remember that our state Constitution was deliberately written to preserve white supremacy. They SAID SO at the time.

The historian told me
that nobody
listens to historians.

A four-panel comic. In the upper left panel, Sluggo from the Nancy comic approaches a knothole in a fence plank. In the upper right panel, Sluggo leans in to peer through the knothole. In the bottom left panel, there is a portion of the hell section of Hieronymus Bosch painting 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'. In the bottom left panel, Sluggo is showing recoiling with a look of confusion on his face.

If they’re killing white people on camera in the street, what horror do you think are they inflicting on our brothers and sisters and children in detention centers? we will not look away. close all detention centers. let our people go.

Any views on Edwin Brock's poetry beyond the two or three heavily anthologised poems that many people know? I've been reading some of his stuff and it seems interesting...
