These are just a handful of my volunteering. I’m very self-aware of the fact that I may never experience these programs in my life, but that does not mean I shouldn’t understand them. This is just the tip of the iceberg of who I am.

I wanted to understand immigration (as an immigrant myself):

So I volunteered as a translator for those who were facing deportation through Immigration Justice Programs.

I wanted to understand educational inequality:

So I volunteered as a program helper for the Junior Achievement Program. Seeing first-hand how funding deeply affects different schools.

I wanted to understand crime in youth:

It’s always “they are unemployed or fatherless…” so redundant.

So l volunteered at a juvenile center. I was a mathematics and literature tutor for ages ranging up to 21.

There I got to understand why SOME of them felt the need to commit crimes.

I wanted to understand social programs and break down the myth of “people who just abuse free things":

So I volunteered at a food shelter amongst other things. I got to learn the process of how people come in and the breakdown of creating this program.
