Weโ€™ve wrapped up drilling at Crary Ice Rise with 228m of sediment core. This is an unprecedented record of the history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet stretching back millions of years. Initial observations indicate the core includes periods of environmental change during past times of warming.

Weโ€™ve hit a century! 100m of core!ย Our night-shift crew took us past this milestone โ€“ weโ€™re now more than halfway towards our target.ย Reaching this point is testimony to the skill and hard work of our drillers, who are clocking up long runs and cores of up to 3.1mย ๐Ÿ‘‰https://bit.ly/4aHvt5e

West Antarcticaโ€™s history of rapid melting foretells sudden shifts in continentโ€™s โ€˜catastrophicโ€™ geology A picture of what West Antarctica looked like when its ice sheet melted in the past can offer insight into the continentโ€™s future as the climate warms.

Our latest paper was published in PNAS. This presents the geochemical evidence for the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the mid-Pliocene, based on results from IODP Exp 379 (2019).
