It's crazy how fast the colors change at Mount St. Helens. Even as I was painting this the warm golden glow darkened and confused me - my painting ended up darker than I wanted but I still love how it turned out!

My favorite page so far of my sketchbook journal from my #sciart residency at Mount St. Helens. I fell in love with the field of petrography and now I want to look at every single rock I find under a microscope.

Hah, yeah it's so bad! Honestly the soil now is still very concentrated in ash! Even in the areas that are fully green now.

It's still a really dynamic ecosystem because the soil is changing and recovering still. The trees especially - used to be old growth pines but now it's mostly alders because they grow faster and easier.

This is such a great question!! I'm planning to write more about it in blog form soon, but it's both! After the eruption a few hardy plants survived via roots underground, many came via seed afterwards especially ones that can grow in bad ashy soil (taproots).
