The lower Snake River have transformed the ecosystem from a healthy free-flowing river into a series of slow-moving reservoirs that trap heat throughout the summer. They have made our river sick and unsafe for people, pets, and ecosystems.

Toxic Algal Blooms aren’t just dangerous for the aquatic ecosystems, including the salmon that migrate through them. They also are harmful to humans and their pets, containing unsafe levels of microcystins, which can cause liver damage and other adverse health effects.

This past summer, we saw 11 toxic algal blooms (TABs) across the Snake River. This is the third consecutive year that we have seen TABs on the lower Snake River. TABs grow in warm, stagnant water with added nutrients. The lower Snake River dams create these exact conditions.

BPA told the council it should completely abandon its long-held yet unmet goal of 5 million annual returning adult salmon and steelhead, and remove ANY legal obligation for BPA to recover salmon and steelhead.

Right now, the Northwest Power and Conservation Council is working on amendments to update its fish and wildlife program. As part of this process, the Bonneville Power Administration's (BPA) submitted recommendations thatwere shockingly obtuse and retrograde.

🚱 The dams and reservoirs on the Columbia-Snake River create an unhealthy and unnatural ecosystem. Already, temperatures have consistently reached above 68°F in 6 of the reservoirs we're looking at. Rather than address this, we're seeing federal agencies critical to salmon recovery at risk of being eliminated, habitat restoration funding in jeopardy, and our utilities attempting to completely eliminate their obligation and responsibility to recover wild salmon and steelhead.

Columbia Basin salmon are in deep crisis: Most wild salmon and steelhead runs today persist at a fraction of their historic abundance and geographic distribution, and some (including three of five in the Snake River) persist at less than one percent of their historic abundance.
