once heard ridiculous apocrypha that the similar, lesser used London slang β€œnang” once referred to a specific person: a now legendary girl of Vietnamese origin idolised by her classmates in north London and beyond

On the one hand, China is not smoothly top down and technocratic -- vertical and horizontal fragmentation abounds. But on the other, this is interesting. Add to the (quite large) file marked: FT being more open to straightforwardly discussing leftwing economic arguments than most would expect

How β€˜marine heatwaves’ affect the ocean – and what can be done? As we enter El NiΓ±o, ocean heatwaves are predicted to get worse and happen more often. What do they do to marine life, and can we adapt?

Have Overcast users (@samuelwade.bsky.social ?) found that some podcast feeds no longer update? Any reason why? And what’s the best alternative app?

Perhaps the relevant differentiation is β€œresponse” to climate change vs *leadership*. IMHO the first test of climate leadership should be solidarity with those most affected, and the more specific we can be about what that looks like, the better.

06.07.2023 11:21 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

One of the many ways climate change is a wicked problem is that in response to crisis, many governments are happy to turn inward. The idea that anyone should be reducing an aid ('aid') budget now is ridiculous. The idea that development needs should compete with each other, more so.

putting aside control of the upstream (mining), i don’t think we should underestimate how difficult it would be to relocate or onshore a massive, energy and capital intensive, polluting industry like refining, which operates on incredibly thin profit margins
