I'm not saying the way to fix this is to like all games and be falsely positive.

All I'm saying is, tearing down games - especially free ones, where nothing really was owed, it was just a game to try and leave it with no investment - won't fix the slopification at all, it'll do the opposite.

EVERY game in existence can benefit from an extra pair of developers' eyes and extra time spent on working on it, so you can only imagine what this will lead to.

You'll just get more slop, and more sloppy slop at that, too.

They learnt long game dev cycles are super risky. Every extra month adds a pile to the investment. Games aren't worth it, game studios aren't worth it. How do we cut it in half, in quarters?

Most of these investments obviously didn't pan out. What do you think investors learnt from that? "They needed another genre?" "They just needed more interesting character design?" "They needed better-sized maps?" "They just needed the guns to feel better?"

The people who actually decide which games are made (if we're talking big, expensive projects) are people with money. Shareholders, investors. Mostly know shit about games. Probably why new studios emerging ~6 years ago had an easier time gaining funds for generic hero shooters.

The tragic paradox of modern gaming discourse: most active participants don't understand that piling up on new studios which made something fairly generic or not to their taste (like Highguard) won't fix their problem and result in better games.

The outcome is MUCH worse.
