The award coincided with the Life After PhD event, where senior GCs shared their career stories to a room full of aspiring research GCs. It was striking to hear the adversities they faced & need to validate the value of our profession. One person being told ‘GC with a PhD was a waste of a post-doc’

I’m honoured to have been awarded a Young Tall Poppy Science Award for 2025, among a cohort of inspiring researchers from across QLD and Australia. The Young Tall Poppy award celebrates excellence in research and a passion for sharing science with the broader community.

By interviewing parents, we found:

✨High satisfaction with the model of care, which was driven by trust in medical team, timely access to testing and access to genetic counsellor.

✨But families need more support due to ongoing trauma, and distress arising from their child's health condition.

🚨Excited to share our paper exploring parents' experiences with mainstreamed genomic testing for paediatric immunology.

We previously reported on our model that includes genetic counsellor embedded in the service. The model improved access to genetic test, but parental experience remained unknown.
