This is why I understand thermodynamics better than mechanics: thermo is just so transparent in this sense. You can see how abstract laws of thermodynamics get converted into rigid mathematical structures. It's all mental gymnastics. Theoretical mechanics don't have the same kind of feel to it.

I treat an area of science as understood when I can notice how and why the key definitions of that field were constructed. This is the reason why math is so much easier to understand for me than physics: physicists often escape such critical analysis by the usage of words like "it's obvious".
