DOGE Track: Tracking The Damage A website tracking the various activities of the DOGE wrecking crew across government. Sunlight is the best disinfectant!

So, as you might know, I have been in the process of tracking the activities of DOGE staff across the federal government. And now I've built an auto-updating website to browse the data

It's not done (lots more content to write), but news is moving fast, so here it is dogetrack.info

Enjoy!

Something I found interesting about reading this thread is that it made me wonder how many people think of ChatGPT as primarily a tool for writing things for you

I use ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini possibly 100+ times a day and NONE of those uses are to produce writing that I then share with other people

Venezuelan Immigrant Deported by Trump Administration Has Disappeared The Venezuelan man does not appear on a list of people sent to a prison in El Salvador, and his family and friends have no idea of his whereabouts.

I tried to help a reporter find a migrant who was arrested after a wrong turn found him in Canada and trying to return to the US. We could see his entrance, arrest, detention and the details of his case, including his attempts to secure a lawyer. and a subsequent removal order. But then?

Interestingly, getting rid of the people responsible for complying with public-records laws does not relieve the government of its obligation to comply with the laws.

Not that Norfolk! Mislabelled shipments led to Trump tariffs on uninhabited islands and remote outposts with no US trade Exclusive: Aquarium systems, Timberland boots and recycling plant parts were mislabelled as coming from remote Norfolk Island or Heard and McDonald islands

We've solved the mystery on why all those remote and uninhabited islands were targeted for tariffs by Trump - they show up in US trade data due to mislabelled shipments. eg mixing up Norfolk, Virginia or Norfolk UK with Norfolk Island!

This PQ from Kevin Hollinrake raises an important point. I've never understood why returning officers are outside FOI, and when I was at the BBC we relied on their goodwill (sometimes forthcoming, sometimes not) for collecting data from them.

Especially among people working on news-adjacent AI stuff, it's really common to find the "fundamental category error" of "thinking journalism is about synthesising existing texts".
I've thought about this quote regularly over for the past year as I keep running into examples of this.
