I haven't read up too much with the update. But I think its possible to make a datapack that can do both.

It would be cool if you could hold shift and they go on the bottom shelf.

Yep Earth to Blender then obj to schematic. For this I used the objtoschematic.com website.

Theres also BlockBlender for making schematics. It gives you more control but it is a paid plugin

I think it boils down to it being easy to implement. A lot of times it its just been model swaps. This is what Satisfactory does.
