Gundam doujinshi and FC zines that were officially recognized, patronized and read by official Sunrise and Studio II staff. Among them are several yaoi and BL works, including BIRD and Survival. BIRD, vol. 1 in this case, was headed by the BL/yaoi circle Albatross from 1979 to roughly 1982, many members being involved with Mari Hibiki's circle NORMAL until 1983. Survival was headed by the circle Gundam & Anime FC Atmosphere, a group of high school age fans that were primarily women. WHITE BASE and ZAKU II were headed by young women who were often given unmitigated studio access for interviews, fanart and more, much with a yaoi slant, implied or otherwise. I recently wrote some criticism and offered some background information on doujinshi, queer or otherwise, that Yoshiyuki Tomino & Sunrise Studio II official acknowledged during Gundam's original 1979-1980 run, many by female fans. Link will be in the thread below! 🧵

Extra mini tip! If you weren’t already aware, the artist/s who illustrated a Gunpla’s box artwork are typically listed on the side of its box. Notable exceptions being Ver.Ka kits, or older kits, where often the credits are on the front, or within, the instructions booklet.

Fun fact: An early indicator of Mobile Suit Gundam’s popularity was the vinyl release of Takeo Watanabe and Yushi Matsuyama’s OST, produced by King Records. The first album sold approx. 20,000 copies (a respectable number), while its successor sold over 100,000 copies (a remarkable number)!

Caught this out in town today - a painting by Kanji Yumisashi, as part of a long-term collaborative project with 4th & 5th grade school kids (one of many pieces of artwork created during this period, though I think the only Gundam-related piece) 🤩
