the coast guards job is just to tell the volunteers what to do. they also sometimes can helicopter people to hospitals etc. but volunteers r the first responders

all militaries shld be abolished and replaced by search and rescue people instead. fuel young peoples' desire for a regimented life of service by making them get really good at cave diving or high stakes mountaineering recovery.

i found out recently that the uk's coast guard dont have life boats. life boats are manned by volunteers across several different agencies. volunteers. how can you spend billions of dollars on old inbred white people but not pay COASTAL LIFE SAVING WORKERS in your ISLAND COUNTRY

even if im also like. ma'am do you not think that the epidemic of priests assaulting boys and getting away with it warranted some discussion in your exorcist narrative. but i suppose that might not have been on her radar at time of writing

like. she leaves room for the viewer to be any gender and to have a variety of responses. given that her inciting incident was wondering why a bunch of teenage boys were iding with teenage girls on screen (and why so many straight men were writing them) i think thats fair

which i think is interesting bc in my reading. yeah shes harsh in like one place in chap one. but in the book as a whole shes pretty nuanced/thoughtful, much more than i was expecting

i do have one with a 2015 preface where shes more like "im less 'this is for sure antifeminist' than i was before given the gender transformation of the last 20 years" and also complains that the only chapter people remember is the first one

also it is casually transphobic in a way that has me like. hey girl. you published this in 1992...... do better

i do think she forgets that men are like. also victims of sexual violence though.

"horror lets men identify with women and the fear of vulnerability that feminity represents but with plausible deniability" if u take out all the binary bullshit and the love of freud, very compelling actually

i finally actually read men, women, and chainsaws and i think a lot of people think this book is arguing something that its actually troubling. many such cases with foundational texts huh

absolutely wild to see this level of "the tariffs are fine and actually coffee is bad for you" propaganda
