I think it's either how different the factions are, or how good the art is (or both) that really makes the Woodlands come alive, so I'm itching to get in there and tell some more detailed stories for these critters

I do think there's some handing it to Lovecraft, but most of the biggest works aren't even a case of standing on the shoulders of giants. Re-Animator (and Bride of) are great movies but the main credit goes to the movie cast and crew, not the source material.

Overall it was needlessly heavy on praise for Lovecraft, who arguably didn't even write the best bits of the Mythos which makes me kinda uncomfortable, but cosmic horror is so much fun and it's not really all that hard to do better with it.
