BREAKING: The Senate fails at passing the House version of a short term spending plan 55-45 (60 votes needed). That means the federal government will shutdown at midnight. The first time since 2018.

This was a perfectly appropriate end to a lackluster and disappointing Mets season. They had every opportunity to be successful this year and they squandered every chance they got.They did us all a favor by not making us sit through a wildcard round. #LGM (I guess)

Our colleagues at NBC Washington reporting there has been a blown transformer and oil spill at the Benning Road Power Plant in Washington, DC. You can see the smoke rising from the plant all the way on Capitol Hill. No word on a cause or casualties.

JUST IN: House Oversight Democrats release the Jeffrey Epstein “birthday book” letter allegedly contributed by Donald Trump. Trump is suing the Wall Street Journal for their description of the letter. This was obtained by Oversight as part of a subpoena of the Epstein estate.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis confronts RFK with his past past statements about outgoing CDC director Susan Monarez before he fired her. And then goes down a list of statements he made in his confirmation hearing and tells him they seem contradictory.

GOP Sen. John Barrasso pressing RFK about vaccine access and asks what guarantees he can make that people will have safe and responsible access to vaccines.

Sen. Mark Warner corners RFK jr. on covid deaths. Kennedy is unable to provide a specific number.. and claims the data is unreliable. Warner says it’s unbelievable he doesn’t know that number 8 months into the job.

Cassidy attacks RFK’s adjustment over covid vaccine recommendations by giving specific examples of people having difficulty getting the vaccine. Cassidy says plainly that people will have less access to the vaccine to which Kennedy disagreed.

Combatively- RFK asks Cassidy if he has a question about vaccines or if he is just “giving a speech”. Kennedy then claims his complaint was about mandates, not the vaccine itself.

Sen. Bill Cassidy opens his questioning of RFK by getting him to agree Trump deserved the Nobel Peace prize for Operation Warp Speed which led to the covid vaccine.. he then begins to press him on his vaccine skepticism. Calls it “inconsistent”.

Perhaps the most anticipated questioning today will come from Senator Bill Cassidy who has repeatedly said he wants “oversight” related to RFK’s controversial decisions. The two shook hands before the hearing.

RFK Jr. said that the CDC “failed miserably” during the covid pandemic and that is part of the reason why the agency was in need of an overhaul. He said they need people ready to “chart a new course” there.

Early on in his opening statements, protestors interrupt RFK’s testimony. Chair Crapo called for the protesters to be removed quickly.

RIGHT NOW: Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden asks to formally swear in RFK jr. before his high stakes hearing because of what Wyden described as his pattern of lying. Chair Mike Crapo turned the request down.

White House plans to use 'pocket rescissions' to slash billions in foreign aid The White House plan to cut foreign aid includes a $3.2 billion slash to funds for USAID.
