The sheer number of people reacting to random things on here can't be real. Why would people do this? To what end? How do they have all these users?

I'm not posting yet. Lurking is what we used to do in new online communities, to learn the ways. It's an old habit, and one I still find valuable. Besides, this place needs to have a value prop first.
