The PIP and UC bill is an attack on disabled people.

I will be voting against the bill today to make clear disabled people matter and that I recognise the additional costs of navigating a world built for neurotypical, healthy people.

Everyone at the SNP DMG is devasted to hear of passing of Christina. She was a political force of nature and a true friend and ally to the disabled community.

Scotland deserves better

Westminster keeps failing disabled people. Scotland should have full control over benefits, so we can make a fairer system.

We demand that Labour stop these cuts now!

The SNP says NO to these cuts

Disabled people are not a burden. Their rights and dignity must be protected. The SNP will fight against these cuts every step of the way.

We stand with disabled people

The SNP Disabled Members Group supports charities and organisations fighting these cuts. We agree with Scope, Disability Rights UK, Mind, and Citizens Advice that these cuts are unfair. Disabled people should be at the centre of decisions about benefitsโ€”not ignored.

Labour promised no cuts โ€“ but they are cutting anyway

Before the election, Labour said they would not cut benefits. Now they are making huge cuts that hurt disabled people the most. Some Labour MPs are even supporting these cuts, which will hurt people in their own communities.

20.03.2025 11:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Why is this bad?

Disabled people already face many challenges in life. Many cannot work or need extra support to live independently. Cutting benefits will not help people into work. It will only make life harder.

20.03.2025 11:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

What is happening?

Labour wants to change benefits for disabled people. They plan to make it harder to get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit for disabled people - 700,000 disabled people could be pushed into poverty because of these cuts.

SNP Disabled Members Group Statement on Labourโ€™s ยฃ6bn Welfare Cuts

The SNP Disabled Members Group strongly condemns the British Labour governmentโ€™s decision to impose ยฃ6 billion in welfare cuts, targeting some of the most vulnerable people in our society. These cuts represent an outright betrayal of disabled people and expose the devastating impact of Westminsterโ€™s austerity politics.

Disabled people across the UK already face significant barriers to employment, financial security, and basic dignity. Life costs more for disabled people. Cutting essential disability benefits like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and the Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) element of Universal Credit will push hundreds of thousands further into poverty, with Scopeโ€™s analysis warning that 700,000 more disabled households could be affected. These proposals are not only cruel but counterproductive, punishing those who need support rather than addressing systemic barriers to work and wellbeing.

Labourโ€™s decision to follow in the footsteps of previous Tory governments by targeting disabled people for austerity is disgraceful. During the election, Labour claimed there would be โ€œno austerityโ€ under their leadershipโ€”yet, within weeks of taking power, they have launched a full-scale attack on those who can least afford it. Scottish Labour MPs cheering on these cuts should be ashamed, as they are directly harming their own constituents.

The SNP Disabled Members Group stands firmly with disabled people and their allies in opposing these devastating cuts. We fully support the coalition of disability organisationsโ€”including Scope, Disability Rights UK, Mind, and Citizens Adviceโ€”that have written to the Chancellor urging the government to rethink its approach. We echo their call: the needs and voices of disabled people must be at the heart of welfare reform, not an afterthought.

It is a political choice to cut benefits for disabled people while maintaining Tory fiscal rules, increasing National Insurance, and scrapping essential supports like the Winter Fuel Payment. Disabled people are not an economic burdenโ€”our rights and dignity should never be up for debate.

Westminsterโ€™s continued failure to support disabled people reinforces the urgent need for Scotland to have full control over social security, so we can build a system based on fairness, dignity, and respect.

We urge the Labour government to immediately abandon these disastrous plans. Anything less is a betrayal of the very people they claim to represent.

๐Ÿงต Labourโ€™s Cuts Hurt Disabled People

The SNP Disabled Members Group is very unhappy about the British Labour governmentโ€™s plan to cut ยฃ6 billion from welfare benefits.

These cuts will hurt disabled people the most. Many disabled people already struggle to afford food, heating, and basic needs

The Fund has been operating since 2016 on a non-statutory basis. The effect will be to ensure that the Fund continues to support disabled candidates to stand for election in Scottish Parliament and local government elections as long as the provision remains in force.

72% of rare diseases are genetic, whilst others are the result of infections (bacterial or viral), allergies and environmental causes or are rare cancers.

Internatrional collaboration in reseach is vital to connect researchers and clinicians, ensuring progress in diagnosis, treatment, and care.

There are 600+ identified rare diseases and due to the wide diversity of rare diseases, and the presence of relatively common symptoms that can mask underlying ones, misdiagnosis is common.

Symptoms not only vary between different diseases but can also differ between people with the same ones

Rare Diseases currently affect about 5% of the worldwide population.

The need for high-quality, specialised healhcare creates inequalities and barriers to accessing rare disease treatment and care, therefore it is important that we do what we can to raise awareness and help remove these barriers

Over 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease and they face many challenges.

The lack of scientific knowledge and reliable information on them often leads to delays in diagnosis.
