as i'm still in academia atm, i was also considering talking to professors at university to see if anyone would be interested in this and maybe help you get in touch - though i know this is a very "far out there" type of idea

understandable. i feel very out of touch with my cohort too, so I would not know how to approach people there either.

generally, e-mails could be a good way to get in touch with people - you could look for the department of astronomy in a university and email someone whose research seems fitting?

i do agree about the US, a shame as it is. but have you considered looking for something abroad? it doesn't have to be a position that would require moving, but maybe a contact who could help with the projects!

I'm in a slightly similar boat, as I used to make a webcomic about particles. and now, I'm planning to make another, about a slightly different field.

and communicating knowledge in creative ways is a great thing IMO, makes you think differently about it!
