Audit finds flaws in State Police oversight of sex offender registry Auditor General report on Michigan State Police handling of sex offender registries finds shortcomings.

Not a good look, but the real scandal is how these registries have not been shown to prevent crime. In fact, some studies show they _increase_ risk. https://www.michiganpublic.org/politics-government/2025-10-16/audit-finds-flaws-in-state-police-oversight-of-sex-offender-registry

Michigan Senate bills would cut maximum prison time for some drug dealers The Michigan bills would maintain current penalties for heroin and fentanyl trafficking.

Remember: There's no evidence that long prison sentences deter crime. https://www.mlive.com/politics/2025/10/michigan-senate-bills-would-cut-maximum-prison-time-for-some-drug-dealers.html

What It's Like to Have Your Period in Prison Even at a women’s prison, your menstruation care needs may not be met.

"In an environment where nothing is private, even the most basic aspects of personal care become luxuries. For incarcerated women, managing a menstrual cycle is not just a routine part of life β€” it is often a monumental struggle."

Our kids deserve better. Every kid in the youth justice system should have access to a properly-trained, properly-paid attorney. Short changing our kids = short changing our future. https://wdet.org/2025/10/14/wayne-county-juvenile-attorneys-pay-raise/

Yes, being a survivor of trafficking should be a mitigating factor in sentencing, expungement. It should also allow for after-the-fact resentencing if not considered in initial case. https://home.mirs.news/post/anti-human-trafficking-bills-focus-on-demand-side

Violent crime numbers in Detroit keep falling Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies gathered to highlight continued declines in the number of homicides, shootings, and carjackings since the pandemic.

Less violence in MI cities is great news, & the state funding commitments for community violence intervention will help keep this moving forward https://www.michiganpublic.org/public-safety/2025-10-06/violent-crime-numbers-in-detroit-keep-falling

🚨MDOC needs to modify their strip search policy to be less intrusive.

To make the most of this win the next battle will be to make sure that impacted community voices are part of the review processβ€”something the MDOC has rarely (ever?) done well.

This is a good change. MDOC had tried to limit legislative oversight by requiring 72 hour notice before a legislative visit. Legislature clapped back & said "let us in."

Now it's on us to make sure they use that oversight capacity.

Our members have a list of notes on how parole could be run better, but cuts to the parole board do nothing for public safety, fiscal accountability.

Reductions to parole board funding? Like they say in recover, let's play the tape out.

The parole board needs to have the resources to get their decisions right: too strict and lives and $ is wasted w/ unneeded incarceration; to loose & there's a risk to community.

yep, cuts the reentry funds for community partners 😑
We need to separate support from supervision, the community partners provide trust and support no parole officer can. They should be funded, not cut.

If they aren't getting enough food at chow, don't have fam putting $ on their account, and they can't make enough at prison wages, what's the alternative? Theft of hustle.

Hangry prisoners + the need to turn to illicit activities to get πŸ₯— = less rehabilitation, more violence
