These ladies all talk like my mom and her friends. It’s real endearing and their accent is so pronounced! I couldn’t distinct it for years until I moved to Manhattan Chinatown where most folks are from the mainland

had a real bright moment today in Boston when I realized the restaurant I was in had Taiwanese staff and could understand my Taiwanese-American accented Mandarin. They even offered to charge my phone once I started chatting 🥰

i just got my license less than a year ago having never driven nor needed a car having lived in New York for 12 years prior. It’s very surreal to feel teenage agency lensed through my 30’s.

So funny getting formative car experiences at age 33. My friends are like "🙄yeah pretty cool huh?”. Meanwhile i'm weeping behind my sunglasses with the windows down, wind in my hair, sunrise in the rearview, sundress flapping, driving to my childhood home. “It’s so beatiful 😭”

Foley is sonic cosplay. You break down the textures, clothing, props, and performance of the character: and then portray them in the world or the story. I say “weaponized asmr” to describe the effect of Foley but in the craft, we are sonically dressing the character. And then, walking the runway.

called it months ago the moment the two of them spoke to each other for the first time. Heart is full. Blessed by the goddess of love to be a conduit and a facilitator.

got to visit the Fox Lot and One Step Up, one of the best Foley studios in the world. I also somehow ended up leaving the gift shop with a Simpsons production cell

every few months, i get a small burst of new followers on instagram or bluesky and i’ve realized, “somewhere, a sound design professor just started a section on Foley and played back the Wired Video or 32 Sounds to their students”

New year. new era.

That might seem superficial, but values and an ambition to learn about the other person while experiencing new things is key to a good relationship. Being able to visualize each other is important to creating the type of deep imagination and hope that inspires couples to try unique things together

the rest is pretty straightforward. I like matching couples who look like they come from the same action figure set. Not even in fashion necessarily, but if I can visualize the two of them together, they can too. The couple has to be able to dream ambitiously and with hope for their future

Rule 3) I only match within my pool of contacts. This has made San Diego pretty hard since I had such a broad network in New York. the reason is simple: I wouldn’t set you up with a stranger and it takes at least several hours of direct in person contact for me to understand your values

Rule 2) I only put the two people in a room once. the actual work of romance and dates comes down to the couple. If a duo is correct, i’m only ever there for the initial push, magnetism and shared values do the rest of the work.

Rule 1) people have to be emotionally matured. I’ve rejected friends who have asked for my prowess since simply, they aren’t looking for a partner, they’re looking for an easy solution to their own problems. My long term rate is good since I flat out do not match folks who aren’t ready

And so: i know the majority of the reasons why I would/wouldn’t be a good partner, and have had the time, theory, and canvas to see it play out by matching others. I’ve cultivated rules and I am void in all of them

great matchmakers start seeing patterns and cultivate a worldview about the unspoken mechanisms of desire, chemistry, and emotional reciprocity. We either lack the control in our own lives that we use to match others or we assess our own standing and find ourselves out of the running

it’s a nice coincidence that i’m performing Foley for a film about matchmaking this month and bonded with the director about it. Sad truth is, good matchmakers (esp professional ones) often have the most chaotic dating lives themselves for a few reasons

Fun Joanna lore: did you know that of the 6 couples i’ve match made, 4 of them got married/engaged? The 2 that didn’t, one ended up being a long term relationship and the other was my only true flop.
