iirc, they had to be alive but a lot of the time they were using sick or injured animals (because of Cassie’s parents being vets) and it wasn’t a problem because it was DNA so you were always transforming into a healthy version of that animal

Oh, I meant turn into an animal with a better nose to track the coyote before turning back into myself to collect its DNA. They definitely used that kind of thing in the books, i.e. turn into a bird of prey to find a mouse you can acquire for the stealth mission you’re planning in a few days

I’m thinking a Central Park Coyote. Which, realistically, I probably couldn’t find myself but, if I had other animal powers, I could probably locate one to touch it long enough to collect its DNA
