Are you suggesting that I get rent free space in some head spaces that happen to be hostile to renters?

It has been the honor of my life to serve as Commissioner of BLS alongside the many dedicated civil servants tasked with measuring a vast and dynamic economy. It is vital and important work and I thank them for their service to this nation.

The fact that literally zero outlets ever cover crime decline as a story is a huge reason. (And before you yell at me, we do!)

Today, my teenager reached out to hold my hand as we walked through ancient streets & asked me to take his picture while the sun set over the ocean behind him.

Everyone talks about magic first milestones, but the maybe-could-be-a-last - these waning moments of boyhood - are everything to this mama.

But once it is built, it will have an exclusive (private) lessee and prevent any meaningful competition (which may not exist today but could).

We took the train London-Paris-London and then flew Stansted to Zadar and all I could think to describe the difference was that the train was so much more “humane” than flying! Truly just more human (especially mom solo with 3 kids) friendly.

I would not be excited if it were any other company. Publicly needed infrastructure shouldn’t be privately controlled, a closed loop isn’t a real solution, and granting a state-sponsored monopoly to emerging tech (in this case to self driving, which I suspect is where this goes) hurts innovation.

My references were pretty specific to a local story in Nashville re a certain tech company boring a tunnel from downtown to the airport. The tunnel would be for one electric car company only and not connect to a broader network for transit alternatives. Hopefully that clears it up!

Single route versus single lane are pretty different IMO. One only goes from point A to point B, whereas the other could be part of a network of places. (Not that we are great at either in most of the U.S.)

Yes!! We did a day trip to Paris! There and back - easy - as a birthday present for our middle. It was so easy and lovely!

Interrupting my annual vacation to say:

Pretty sure that one tech company being given a state-sponsored monopoly over emerging technology is a great way to make sure the tech is never great.

Also having spent a week on the Tube and Eurostar, pretty sure a single route tunnel is wildly inefficient.

Our last day ever doing daycare drop off & I’m a big crying mess over here.

Save for a few months in 2020, I’ve been dropping a kid off at daycare since January 2012.

Would be impossible to overstate the amazingness of all our teachers over the years & how grateful I am for them. #takesavillage

It’s interesting because I thought of the em as taxes, just taxes that were limited & unique - but there is a case out of west Tennessee that our legal counsel pointed to as saying they’re not a “tax”. They sure walk and talk like taxes - assessed just like a tax and collected just like a tax!

I take issue with the argument that only 1 part of our city can control something anyone who participates in the economy pays. While yes renters don’t get a say at formation, that property cost already exists today & would exist regardless of a vote last night. The sales tax is the new result. /end

There was a lot of talk about how this is a “district issue” and people can chose how to structure their district re taxes (or assessments). I was really focused on that - it’s not a district issue because spending money in the Gulch isn’t something only folks in that council district do. /1

"We are paying a tax, and to the extent our citizens are paying a tax, I think we have a right to say who should decide how those tax dollars are spent," says QES.

"This may be a property assessment...but it is a TAX on all of us," says QES. She doesn't want us to lose sight of that.
