A brilliant paper from Alexander Sutherland of @kcllnucsc.bsky.social @warstudieskcl.bsky.social A very balanced presentation, discussing the pro- and anti-Azov cohorts of historians #CrimeanWar

The full gravestone to John Duggan, who was born in 1814 and died in 1881. He enlisted in the British Army in the 17th Lancers and served with them in the Crimean War at the Alma, Inkerman, Sebastapol and at Balaklava. Indeed, Trooper Duggan was one of the '600' Light Brigade that charged the Russian guns on 25 October 1854. At the top of his gravestone is the regimental badge of the 17th Lancers, a skull and crossbones surrounded by lances and pennants (representing 'Death') above the motto 'Or Glory'. As such they were often known as the 'Death or Glory Boys'. Duggan was extremely severely wounded in the charge and was evacuated the next day to Selimiye Barracks hospital at Scuttari.
R Caton Woodville's famous painting of the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava, mainly depicting the 17th Lancers (11th Hussars are also shown).
I always find this gravestone for John Duggan, in St Mary's Drogheda, incredibly moving. One of the '600' who rode into the 'Valley of Death' as a 17th Lancer #otd 1854, he survived - but only just. John fought throughout #CrimeanWar & ended his days as Sexton of St Mary's, dying in 1881, aged 67.
