Not helped by the fact I used all my annual leave this year to go and lecture in Antarctica ๐Ÿ˜‚

I have the whole thing planned honestly and it's a follow-on from my MA. I'm absolutely in love with the subject I have all of the structure and everything plan they just haven't got the time to actually get to any archives or write anything.

Yeah I am looking for something else and my boss knows it but I'm waiting to see what happens with the next project because it might calm down and be normal again ๐Ÿ˜‚ this one feels like the exception rather than the rule because of one very difficult client individual who is being got rid of anyway

19.11.2025 09:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah I think I just wanted to do it to prove to myself that I could and to be Dr Kate ๐Ÿ˜‚ but I am hugely enjoying actually having some very limited free time (where I'm ignoring my PhD) and just spending that free time outdoors with the dog/chap

19.11.2025 09:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think this is the thing. I'm doing it for interest not for my career. I have absolutely no desire to work in academia ever

18.11.2025 21:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think I know the answer and I think you're right that that is the answer but I needed people to tell me that it was okay ๐Ÿ˜‚ my brain will just tell me that I've failed even though I have reasonable reason to not continue

18.11.2025 21:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It genuinely depends on the project. If I end up working for the same company on a project next year which is likely then yes. They are incredibly long days with different time zones

18.11.2025 21:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah I just genuinely don't know if it's worth it just for the sake of trying to prove to myself I can do it

18.11.2025 21:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think this is the trouble I have, it's really easy to compare myself to people who have loads of time to do all of the stuff but I just don't if I want to also have a personal life ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 21:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So this is where I'm at the moment and I am burnt out to shit and my hair is falling out and everything is awful and I just don't know if it's worth it

18.11.2025 21:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I don't think it's a case of giving up but I think in the job I'm currently in it's just not feasible I've been doing 15 to 16 hour days and I just haven't got the time on top of it

18.11.2025 21:02 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think I was mostly just doing it to prove that I could ๐Ÿ˜‚ but it transpires that I don't have a normal job

18.11.2025 15:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is kind of where my brain is at because then at least I'm just giving myself deadlines and there isn't really a big one at the end

18.11.2025 15:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah we don't have the option to buy extra annual leave or take any unpaid leave

18.11.2025 15:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Well no so unfortunately that's not how the offshore industry works ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 15:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Well this is also the thing. I am only doing it for interest really ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 12:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It seemed the best description ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 11:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I just don't have the brain space to be sat at a computer from 8 in the morning till 9 at night on my day job and then have to add an extra couple of hours sat at my computer for PhD stuff I fear.

And I love my day job but I'm now understanding why busy people do PhDs when they are retired ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 14    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 13    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Anyway I think I'm trying to work out whether I continue or just call it quits before I incur anymore student loan damage ๐Ÿ˜‚

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The type of job that my day job is is not a standard 9 to 5 and the out of hours is just relentless on this project and it could well be on future projects but I just don't know until they start.

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Most of whom have done a PhD either full-time or worked part-time to be able to do it and I don't have that option because mortgage ๐Ÿ˜‚

I currently have a PhD interruption which gives me a bit of brain space until the new year but I'm wondering whether it's worth even continuing at this point because

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 7    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So I have basically managed to achieve almost nothing for my PhD in the space of a year and I'm doing it part time so I have until 2032 or something but I think the issue is that I compare myself with all of my friends

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 8    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Due to client requirements that hasn't happened and I've basically worked pretty much every weekend since April in some way or another. On top of that I did use all my annual leave going to Antarctica which was a wonderful experience but not great as it only left weekends for archive trips.

18.11.2025 11:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 8    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I know I have a lot of people on here who have completed PhDs so I would appreciate the input from you if I may. A lil thread...

When I started there was an understanding with work that if I worked duty weekends I would get days back in lieu from my day job. These would be PhD days but

I can see some bits that probably need tidying up but I'm quite happy with it considering it's a lot bigger than my Star Wars Legion models ๐Ÿ˜‚

The biggest thing I've painted so a bit of a learning curve ๐ŸŽจ

To the innermost heart of their own land they are known as the stars are known to the night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, as the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness

To the end, to the end, they remain...
