Also, this movie understood that the novel was sometimes funny. The start (of the novel) is basically a comedy of manners and misunderstandings, akin to the gothic, but absurd and funny nature of Moby Dick. Brontë is not very consistent with this tonally, and for me, the text is weaker for it.

And people are upset that it lacks Brontë’s confrontation with race… I found that to be unimpressive / insufficient in the source material, so I didn’t miss it here.
