Method after years of experimenting: thick layers: leaves and sticks over grass and weeds, wood chips, manure/compost/kitchen waste, straw. 10-12" high. Ready to plant in spring. End of summer it's barely elevated and gorgeous. Top with salt hay or pine needle mulch to stop weeds, hold moisture.

It's such a beautiful plant. The pollinators love it. I had no idea it existed until I chanced upon it in a native plant sale. Mine bloomed for months this summer and rebounded well after deer pruning.
