Here’s the thing: Once you give up the idea that we are all equal before the law and have the right to due process, you have given up the whole game. You have admitted the principle that some people have more rights than others. Once you have replaced the principle of equality before the law with the idea that some people have no rights, you have granted your approval to the idea of an authoritarian government. At that point, all you can do is to hope that the dictator and his henchmen overlook you.

#3 The politics. The US President is willing to lose a lot of friends abroad if he can relabel the status quo as a win; many of his supporters seem to believe that these victories are real. But they are not.

#2 The bad news. The US govt has proven itself an unreliable partner. Business investments in N.America are now riskier; business uncertainty is now higher. The US will emerge from these charades w/ fewer friends. Other countries will wisely build their economic ties w/o us.

#1 The good news. The US govt decided *not* to levy the largest tax increase in a generation, which would have been very distortionary, hurting production, employment, and growth across North America.

I think people are kinda missing the point of what Trump is talking about by dismantling FEMA. His vision is clearly that the federal government helps red states and lets blue states fend for themselves. Trump is not going to screw over red states, but he'll gladly punish blue ones.
