Hilarious and frustrating: the review is blocked by my work computer.

As I take my baby steps as a leather scholar, I see this book as a reminder about the subjectivity each of us brings to leather scholarship and ways to handle that productively. It’s not a great book but I’m nonetheless glad it exists because our collective of imperfect voices (mine, too) matters.

I’ve only read ten or so pages and not sure I can make it through. Instead, I looked to see if there were reviews of it. This one by Guy Baldwin is mean but also necessary. He asks questions of the book from a place of extensive experience and knowledge: leatherati.com/the-leatherm...

When someone writes, with scant evidence and mostly in absolutes, ‘this is how it was’, doubts come up for me. There are things in the book that are fine, even great. For example, respectful behaviour in a dungeon is always welcome, and there’s no such thing as talking about consent too much.

This arrived yesterday; I ordered it a while back and forgot. In the first 15 seconds of opening a page I thought, oh naur…
To be clear, I am not an expert on all things leather but nonetheless I have read enough and spoken with enough folks over the years to have a nuanced sense of us.
