It’s not my favourite of the series but I still think fondly of its world; its characters, and its message, something I feel is not matched in the REMAKE project.

I even attempted the “level 99 reactor” challenge but gave up at level 15. I replayed the game a lot and tried a few other challenges. More recently I enjoy following any% speed runs.

I ended up getting another copy, this time the real thing. I loved the setting and the story, did everything I could, found various inaccuracies in the walkthrough. By this time we had internet so I discovered GameFAQs and became obsessed with reading the guides there, writing my own in my head too.

I kept asking for it from “my uncle’s friend” who would sell us pirate games for my chipped PlayStation, he wouldn’t do it because it was 3 discs. He went to prison apparently. Another “uncle’s friend” took over the job and cut the prices. I played disc 1 and lost the others.

Day 1: First Final Fantasy
VII was my first. It was a strange time; before I actually got the game I got a little paperback walkthrough book that came with PLASTATION MAX magazine. I read it cover to cover several times and imagined playing it in my head.
