I’ve started wearing a hat at work most days because I like hats. Particularly backwards baseball hats. The students have no opinion on this but man are my co-workers in other colleges and department confused by this. You can be an academic and not wear a blazer. It’s ok friends.

For me, the real humbling bit of this was: you HAVE to keep a regularly updated list of every student who goes on a lab field trip or spends a semester cleaning glassware, otherwise you absolutely will not be able to remember them all at Tenure Time

Behold the Beef N Latke! This baby fed me for a whole day. I know @martinebotany.bsky.social tried this beast at #botany2025 and I hope others did as well.

My fellow big backs going to #botany2025 Sherman’s Deli has an sandwich that is corned beef (Or pastrami) sandwiched between two potato pancakes. It is amazing and near the top of my list for must do during Palm Springs visits.

Semi related: I will always try to go to conference in Maine. Because they tend to serve lobster and watching dozens of scientist from around the world pick lobsters for the first time is objectively hilarious. I highly recommend it.

Gordon Conference on CO2 assimilation continues to be an amazing meeting. My life/research has taken a pretty hard turn from pure photosynthetic research but it’s nice to know I can always go back “home” and have folks to talk with. Now time for naps.

The brownies are coming in clutch.

And in the other side of my professional life, last week was the river field studies network’s Rendezvous where fellows from around the country meet to discuss & plan incorporating outdoor rec w/ STEM, I attended as part of the leadership team. This year we met at WVU & worked on the Cheat River
