As a Progressive forced to vote Democrat, due to only having two stupid corporate parties, I have railed against the Dems poor messaging for decades.

Democrat benefactors would rather lose to Trump than elect a Progressive. Poor messaging isn't an issue to them.

The US has leaders of the opposition. It's not as formalized as the UK but that's not the issue.
