Thanks, appreciate the advice. Live rock isn't as easily obtainable where I am, so after research I'm happy with the pros and cons of the approach I have planned.

My lfs recommended the Red Sea Reef Mature Pro kit so I'm going to try that. I've read that it takes longer without live rock, which is fine as we're not in a rush
