In 2012, she was a surprise guest at Philly's 4th of July concert organized by The Roots, who backed her for a half-hour set.

It was excellent. Every minute of it.

For 20 years straight, nearly every mention of Ms. Lauryn Hill has been accompanied by some punchline about her punctuality. But it is a simple truth that she is a genius, and there's no better evidence than her being damn near the first person in Grammy history to put on a worthy memorial tribute.

It is wild that I just watched Lauryn Hill perform “Killing Me Softly” at the Grammy’s in 2026 in honor of Roberta Flack’s passing and last time I saw Lauryn Hill perform this on TV was *with* Roberta Flack at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards which I watched with my mom.

Time is weird, man.
