First, I applaud you for wanting an editor! I agree, it is not easy to find a good freelance editor, but there are plenty. Experience, a contract (so you both know what to expect), a sample edit, and a consultation, among other things are a good start. Best of luck! 😃

Nonfiction Fun: Start each Chapter with a hook!

It's a good practice to start every chapter with a hook. A hook engages readers and keeps them reading. Take a look at these nonfiction examples.

A) Many marriages don't last.

B) Approximately 45% of marriages will end in divorce this year.

Of course, we can read the entire chapter of both A and B. But which option makes you want to keep reading? The hook is the more intriguing option. (Statistic used for illustrative purposes only. An appropriate statistic will be accompanied by a citation in text.)

FAQ: What if I published a book that contained grammatical errors?

Whether your book was poorly edited or not edited at all, if you have self-published your book:

You can have your book copyedited and republished under the same ISBN.
Significant changes such as removing or adding chapters or changing the title will require a new ISBN when republished.

If you have used a self-publishing platform like Amazon, BookBaby, or Apple Books, to name a few, check their guidelines for specifics.

That’s totally ridiculous! To err is human; to forgive, divine. —Alexander Pope. I also let my clients know that I cannot guarantee no errors. It’s just not realistic.

An email from your future self on an iphone: Create a goal to write a book. Set a weekly or daily alarm to focus and write. Be patient, be positive, and work with an editor. Be proud of your finished manuscript. You’ll thank me later! ❤️

Which Word Do I Use? Let's make sure you write the right word. | Afterword means "an epilogue." The author addresses the readers directly in the afterword of his novel. | Afterward means later. Afterward, we went to Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream.

That is a good point. And editors often exercise discretion when editing. Some will reduce the number of em dashes because a comma, semicolon, or starting a new sentence will work just as well. Creating a company style guide, in addition to the standard editing guide, should produce unified text.
