[BONNE NOUVELLE]

Roberta Metsola @president.europarl.europa.eu denied a request from 145 MEPs to ask for a legal opinion on the #EUMercosur deal

Her argument - that the EU has to sign the deal before MEPs can ask the Court of Justice to check its legality - is plainly and obviously wrong

Here's why:

Can someone explain me how the EP can vote a text on safeguards that refers to trade agreements that we haven't voted on yet 🤨...

The EP pressurised by the EPP leadership is weakening the Parliament’s role and trying to bypass a lawful request of 145 MEPs (Art.218.11 TFEU).

145 MEPs tabled a motion to refer the EU-Mercosur deal to the Court of Justice of the EU

The EPP wants to block that motion at a key meeting TONIGHT

Why? If the deal is legal, let the courts say so

What’s the EPP afraid of?

Is it because they think the court will find an issue?
