Dear @k-interarma.bsky.social thank you so much for this wonderful summary! Giggling a little bit to hear myself described as a benevolent overlord! It’s a team effort! I’m looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues in The Hague! #CAHTreatyNow

Case for Environmental Harm as a 12th Crime Against Humanity Addressing the global environmental crisis requires urgent action. This treaty offers an opportunity to confront it directly and decisively.

From Saddam Hussein’s draining of southern Iraq’s marshes to Russia’s attacks on a Ukrainian dam and nuclear power plant, calls are increasing to recognize mass environmental harms as international crimes.

@leilasadat1.bsky.social outlines a role for the proposed #CrimesAgainstHumanity treaty:

Landmark Ruling Gives Paris Climate Agreement Teeth A rare unanimous ruling from the International Court of Justice creates a pathway to hold all governments, even the climate-denying ones, legally liable for climate risk.

The ruling from the International Court of Justice last week is genuinely a big fucking deal. It makes it a legal obligation for countries to address climate change. Yes, even the ones not signed on to Paris. Yes, even the U.S. More from me & @rishpardikar.bsky.social drilled.media/news/ijc-1

This woman does the best she can and I'm glad she stepped up and got in officers faces.

A few quick notes about "warrants" and due process when law enforcement arrest people, and how this squares with the current TRO that ostensibly blocks profiling by race, language, occupation, and location

know we're not supposed to share things like this on Linkedn, but I'm going to share it anyway because it was horrifying and it's happening everywhere and it needs to be shared.
This morning when I was driving home after dropping my son off at summer camp, I saw a swarm of ICE agents as I drove past our local Home Depot. It looked like they were tying up some workers, and my first reaction was to pull into the parking lot.
I couldn't think. I couldn't process. I couldn't reason. I just jumped out of my car and started filming.
I then watched as these two people were disappeared into unmarked vehicles, with one of the ICE vehicles trying to back into me when I wasn't looking.
Another woman tried to help. An ICE agent tried to slap her phone down when she tried to get a phone number to call this man's family. They wouldn't let her. Instead, they whisked him away and accused her of obstructing justice.
I'm currently lying awake in bed at 11pm thinking about how these men won't return home to their families tonight, and their families will probably never know what happened to them.
I've been through some traumatic events in my life, but I've never witnessed anything like this.
This was down the street from my son's elementary school in our little peaceful coastal town.
You may not see it on the news, but you'll hear it from me because it needs to be shared.

Newsom Formally Asks Trump to Pull National Guard Out of L.A. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, in a letter to the Trump administration, called the deployment of troops β€œunlawful” and a β€œserious breach of state sovereignty.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom demanded on Sunday that President Trump pull California National Guard troops off the streets and away from the demonstrations unfolding in Los Angeles.

Deploying the National Guardβ€”over the objections of state leaders and local law enforcementβ€”is a dangerous escalation.

This isn’t about enforcing law and order, it’s about seizing power and control. Americans won’t tolerate this slide into authoritarianism.

There's no way you can look at Ukraine hitting a lawful military target, used for bombing Ukrainian cities, and think that justifies retribution against those same cities, without believing almost wholly in the Russian framing of the war.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

In 100 days, Trump has managed to more than double inflation expectations to 6.5% from 2.8%. The last time Americans expected this much inflation was in 1980, when inflation was nearly 10% and the country was in a recession.

The thing about Faculty Deans is that those who desperately want the job should not get it and those who should get it absolutely do not want it.
